Bharat Ratna Award: President Droupadi Murmu awards highest civilian honour on 5 Inspirations

President Draupadi Murmu awarded the Bharat Ratna to five Inspirations, including Former Prime Minister of India and advocate for farmers’ rights Mr. Chaudhary Charan Singh, A renowned socialist leader and former Chief Minister of Bihar Mr. Karpoori Thakur ,  along with Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mr. Lal Krishna Advani , Eminent scientist with significant contributions to agriculture Mr. M. S. Swaminathan and Former Prime Minister of India Mr. P. V. Narasimha Rao. The winners were honored at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday except LK Advani who was honored at his residence on Sunday.

Chaudhary Charan Singh

The award conferred on former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh (posthumously) was accepted by Singh’s grandson Jayant Chaudhary.

Mr. Charan Singh was born in 1902 at Noorpur in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh, in a middle class peasant family. He graduated in science in 1923, and did his post-graduation from Agra University in 1925. Also trained in law, he set up practice at Ghaziabad. He shifted to Meerut in 1929 and later joined the Congress. Mr. Chaudhary Charan Singh was a prominent Jat leader from western Uttar Pradesh who served as PM from July 28, 1979, to January 14, 1980.

Mr. Charan Singh served Uttar Pradesh in various capacities and won a reputation as a hard taskmaster who would not tolerate inefficiency, nepotism and corruption in administration. A gifted parliamentarian and a pragmatist, Shri Charan Singh is known for his eloquence and courage of conviction.

He was the chief architect of land reforms in U.P.; he took a leading part in formulation and finalization of the Dept. Redemption Bill 1939, which brought great relief to rural debtors. It was also at his initiative that the salaries and other privileges enjoyed by Ministers in U.P. were drastically reduced. As Chief Minister he was instrumental in bringing about the Land Holding Act 1960 which was aimed at lowering the ceiling on land holdings to make it uniform throughout the State.

 

Karpoori Thakur

Bihar chief minister Karpoori Thakur (posthumously) was awarded the highest civilian award. Thakur’s son Ram Nath Thakur accepted the honour from the President.

Karpoori Thakur (24 January 1924 – 17 February 1988) was an Indian politician who served two terms as the 11th Chief Minister of India, first from December 1970 to June 1971, and then from June 1977 to April 1979.

He was popularly known as Jan Nayak (people’s hero).  Karpoori Thakur was born  at Pitaunjhia (now Karpuri Gram) village in Samastipur District of Bihar. Born into the Nai Samaj, he championed OBC politics and fought against social discrimination. Thakur’s tenure focused on affirmative action, offering opportunities to the disadvantaged. His policies, notably implementing quotas for backward classes, brought significant changes in education, employment, and farmer welfare.

 

Lal Krishna Advani

Lal Krishna Advani was born in Karachi, Pakistan on November 8, 1927, he served as the President of the Bhartiya Janata Party for an extended period since 1980, had a notable political career spanning nearly three decades. He held key positions such as Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister under Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s leadership from 1999 to 2004.

 

M. S. Swaminathan

M. S. Swaminathan(posthumously) was awarded the highest civilian award. Swaminathan’s daughter Nitya Rao accepted the honor from the President.

Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan (7 August 1925 – 28 September 2023) was an Indian Agronomist, Agricultural scientist, Geneticist, Administrator and Humanitarian. Swaminathan was a global leader of the green revolution. He has been called the main architect of the green revolution in India for his leadership and role in introducing and further developing high-yielding varieties of wheat and rice, pivotal in making India self-sufficient in food production by 1971 which earned him the inaugural World Food Prize in 1987.

 

P. V. Narasimha Rao

P. V. Narasimha Rao(posthumously) was awarded the highest civilian award. Swaminathan’s daughter Nitya Rao accepted the honor from the President.  Rao’s son PV Prabhakar Rao accepted the honour from the President.

Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao (28 June 1921 – 23 December 2004), popularly known as P. V. Narasimha Rao, was an Indian lawyer, statesman and politician who served as the 9th Prime Minister of India from 1991 to 1996. P. V. Narasimha Rao was also known as the ‘Chanakya of Indian politics’ is renowned for initiating economic reforms and demonstrating adept political maneuvering.
