Diwali 2025 – The Festival of Lights, Love, and New Beginnings

Diwali

Diwali 2025 , also known as Deepavali, is one of the most vibrant and awaited festivals in India. The word Deepavali literally translates to “a row of lights.” This festival symbolizes the eternal triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.

In 2025, Diwali will be celebrated on Monday, October 20, with great enthusiasm and devotion across India and by Hindus worldwide. The Amavasya Tithi begins on October 19 at 6:28 PM and ends on October 20 at 8:52 PM, marking the perfect time for Lakshmi Puja — the central ritual of Diwali night.

🕯️ Why Do We Celebrate Diwali?

The origins of Diwali vary across regions, but the essence remains the same — celebrating the victory of light, goodness, and positivity.

In North India, Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lord Lakshmana to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and Lord Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana. The people of Ayodhya welcomed them by lighting rows of diyas, which is why we continue the tradition of lighting lamps even today.

In Western India, especially Gujarat, the festival is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity. It also marks the end of the financial year for many business communities who perform Chopda Pujan and open new account books.

In Southern India, Diwali celebrates Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura, symbolizing the destruction of arrogance and evil.

In West Bengal, the same night is observed as Kali Puja, where devotees worship Goddess Kali, the destroyer of evil and darkness.

🌟 The Five Days of Diwali Festivities

Diwali is not just a one-day event; it is celebrated over five days, each carrying deep meaning and rituals:

  1. Dhanteras (17th October 2025) – The festival begins with prayers to Lord Dhanvantari and Goddess Lakshmi for good health and prosperity. Buying gold, silver, or utensils on this day is considered auspicious.
  2. Chhoti Diwali or Naraka Chaturdashi (19th October 2025) – This day marks the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura. People light lamps to drive away negativity and perform cleansing rituals.
  3. Diwali or Badi Diwali (20th October 2025) – The main day of celebration. Devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha, decorate homes with lights and rangoli, and enjoy sweets and fireworks.
  4. Govardhan Puja (21st October 2025) – This day commemorates Lord Krishna lifting the Govardhan mountain to protect villagers from torrential rain, teaching the lesson of faith and humility.
  5. Bhai Dooj (22nd October 2025) – Celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters, much like Raksha Bandhan. Sisters pray for their brothers’ long life and well-being.

💫 The Spiritual Essence of Diwali

Beyond its grandeur and celebrations, Diwali carries a deep spiritual significance.
Lighting a diya isn’t just a ritual — it’s a symbol of dispelling inner darkness.
It’s a reminder to remove negative emotions like hatred, envy, and greed, and replace them with love, compassion, and positivity.

The light of Diwali signifies hope — that no matter how dark life may get, light always finds its way.

🪔 How We Celebrate Diwali

Every home in India begins preparations weeks before Diwali. Houses are cleaned, renovated, and beautifully decorated with diyas, lanterns, and rangoli designs. Families shop for new clothes, sweets, and gifts.

On Diwali night, families gather to perform Lakshmi Puja, seeking blessings for peace, prosperity, and happiness. Diyas are lit around homes, streets, and temples — creating a mesmerizing sea of lights. Later, people burst fireworks, share sweets, and exchange warm greetings.

Diwali also brings a wave of joy for children and adults alike — it’s a time to forgive, start afresh, and strengthen family bonds.

💰 Why Diwali Is So Special

Diwali is not just a festival; it’s a celebration of life itself. It marks new beginnings — be it in business, relationships, or spiritual growth. It’s a festival that unites people beyond religion and region, spreading a universal message:

“Light will always win over darkness.”
