Chaitra Navratri, also known as Vasanta Navratri, marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year and coincides with the beautiful spring season. Celebrated over nine days, it’s a time to honor the divine feminine energy, Shakti, embodied in the nine forms of Maa Durga. These nine nights are celebrated like a vibrant festival with passion and devotion across India and among Hindu community worldwide. Chaitra Navratri, specifically observed in the Hindu lunar month of Chaitra (March-April), holds significant cultural and spiritual importance. Lasting for nine days, this festival is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga and her various forms, representing the triumph of good over evil. The festival will begin on April 9, 2024 (Tuesday) and continue till April 17. Chaitra Navratri also marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year in many parts of India, especially in North India.

Rituals to be considered in Chaitra Navratri Puja

 Each day is associated with the worship of a different form of the Goddess, known as Navadurga, symbolising various virtues and aspects of feminine energy. Here’s a general guide to performing puja during Chaitra Navratri. Remember, specific rituals may vary slightly across regions.

The Holy Preparation:

  • Cleanse your puja space: Create a clean and serene area for your puja.
  • Kalash sthapana: On the first day, establish a Kalash (pot) filled with water and a mango leaf representing the embodiment of Durga.
  • Daily Puja: Each day, wake up early and take a bath before the puja. Light a diya (lamp) and offer incense.
  • Decorate the Kalash: Adorn the Kalash with mango leaves and flowers specific to each day of Navratri.

During the Puja:

  • Offer prayers: Chant mantras dedicated to the specific form of Durga being worshipped each day. You can find these mantras online or in puja books.
  • Bhog (offering): Prepare a simple vegetarian offering (fruits, sweets) for the Goddess.
  • Aarti: Perform aarti with a diya and sing devotional songs in praise of Durga.
  • After the puja, distribute the prasad (blessed offering) among family and friends.

Day 1 of Navratri [9th April 2024]: Goddess Shailputri

Navratri begins with the worship of Goddess Shailputri, also known as the Daughter of the Mountain. She rides a white bull and holds a trishul and lotus. Devotees offer pure ghee or food made from it for her blessings. Her favorite color is orange.

Day 2 of Navratri [10th April 2024]: Goddess Brahmacharini

On the second day, Goddess Brahmacharini is worshipped, symbolizing devotion and penance. She wears white clothes and holds a rosary and kamandalu. Offerings of sugar-based foods are made to her. Her favorite color is white.

Day 3 of Navratri [11th April 2024]: Goddess Chandraghanta

Goddess Chandraghanta, destroyer of demons, is worshipped on the third day. She has ten hands and rides a tiger, with a crescent moon on her forehead. Offerings of kheer are believed to relieve pain. Her favorite color is red.

Day 4 of Navratri [12th April 2024]: Goddess Kushmanda

Goddess Kushmanda, the creator of the world, is worshipped on the fourth day. She rides a lion and has eight hands. Offerings of malpua are made to her. Her favorite color is royal blue.

Day 5 of Navratri [13th April 2024]: Goddess Skandamata

Goddess Skandamata, the mother of Lord Kartikeya, is worshipped on the fifth day. She has four arms and carries a lotus, kamandalu, and bell. Offerings of bananas are made to her. Her favorite color is yellow.

Day 6 of Navratri [14th April 2024]: Goddess Katyayani

Goddess Katyayani, the warrior goddess, is worshipped on the sixth day. She rides a lion and carries a sword, shield, lotus, and trident. Offerings of honey are made to her. Her favorite color is green.

Day 7 of Navratri [15th April 2024]: Goddess Kalaratri

On the seventh day, Goddess Kalaratri, the ferocious form of Goddess Parvati, is worshipped. She rides a donkey and carries a sword, trident, and noose. Offerings of jaggery are made to her. Her favorite color is grey.

Day 8 of Navratri [16th April 2024]: Goddess Mahagauri

Goddess Mahagauri, the four-armed deity, is worshipped on the eighth day. She rides a bull or white elephant and carries a trishul and damru. Offerings of coconut are made to her. Her favorite color is purple.

Day 9 of Navratri [17th April 2024]: Goddess Siddhidatri

The final form of Goddess Durga, Goddess Siddhidatri, is worshipped on the ninth day. She sits on a lotus and holds a mace, discus, book, and lotus. Offerings of til seeds are made to her. Her favorite color is peacock green.
